Playing Cards

Children love using playing cards and there are many education uses for them.
1. Allow your children to create different addition and subtraction sums with playing cards.
2. Allow children to select three cards and calculate the total. If their total is higher than a partner’s, they get a point.
3. The suits show the quantity of the numbers shown to help your children who still require a ‘concrete’ strategy when adding.

Quick Recall

We are always trying to get our children to develop a quicker recall when calculating. I often find that children find addition easier than subtraction. This activity allows your class to develop a quicker recall when taking away, as well as creating targets for future attempts.

World Cup

Let your children complete addition and subtraction sums in a fun way. The children must select the answers to the sums shown by clicking on the answer.

Select the correct answer to block your opponent’s shots and score goals.

Subtract with a Pirate

This video resource explores the concept of subtraction.

Using a catchy song (that all your children will join in with), this resource introduces the various vocabulary associated with taking away.

Extremely visual, entertaining and will get your children involved your children with the simple subtraction stories.

Subtraction Wheel

You can customise this wheel to target different ability groups. You simply write in the subtraction sums you want to and the children will answer them.

Alternatively, you could write in an answer and the children can write a sum that creates the given answer. E.g. If the spinner lands on 4, the children could write 6 – 2 = 4 etc.

Number Line

This resource allows your children to count back using a number line. It is perfect for those children who haven’t quite grasped the number sequences backwards.

Increments Number Line

This is the next step when counting back for your class once they have grasped the sequence of numbers from either 10-1 or 20 to 1. Your children must look and count back carefully when subtracting.
